NARRATIVE ESSAY

WHAT IS A NARRATIVE ESSAY ?

A narrative essay is a type of essay that tells a story. It is written in the first person and is typically told in chronological order, meaning that the events are presented in the order that they happened. The purpose of a narrative essay is to describe a personal experience or event in a way that is engaging and meaningful to the reader.

In a narrative essay, the writer should use descriptive language to bring the story to life and convey their own perspective on the events that occurred. It is important to use sensory details and vivid imagery to create a sense of immersion for the reader and to help them understand the emotions and experiences of the writer.

Narrative essays often have a moral or lesson, and they may also include elements of dialogue and character development. They can be written about a wide range of topics, including personal experiences, historical events, or fictional stories. Many of us are familiar with writing narrative essays at the beginning of every school year in which we talk about ourselves, our hobby’s, favorite things and our summer vacation. Through those writings our teachers and peers get to know more about us.

ASSIGNMENT PROMPT

Professor Metenko also required us to create a Narrative Essay that wasn’t quite like the ones we were used to writing. We had to create a much more college leveled Narrative writing about an experience in our lives in which something or someone died, making the tie between literature of killer stories and our personal lives intertwine in a creative way. Thus, our first project/essay began, and as for every essay to start it you need to read the prompt. Here is the Prompt that Professor Metenko had given us so that it may help guide us into our first writing.

At first, I was over-whelmed by the assignment prompt, as I have never really experienced the death of a pet, a family member or a close friend thankfully. So, I wasn’t really sure what to write about and had to think for a couple of days on what should my topic be. After further pondering and reading many of the given sample essays, I have decided to write about my huge school transition and how a part of me died while doing that. How my old shy and naive self-died and how I grew so much through my transfer from a very small private religious school to the second biggest high school in Brooklyn.

Through writing this essay I had to learn many knew things that I haven’t done in my previous writing classes in high school. such things would be the ” MLA Formatting” and ” MLA Citation”. I had to learn how to properly use citations and how to format my essay and that made me really nervous as it was something completely new to me. Professor Metenko however went through step by step in helping us with our essay and showed me and my peers a very useful website called Purdue Owl MLA Formatting. (Here is the website URL for reference: MLA Works Cited: Electronic Sources – Purdue OWL® – Purdue University)

This absolutely a life saver of a website, through the website you learn how to cite books, articles, videos, magazines, essays etc.

After I have decided on my topic and had a better understanding and grasp of what to do and how to navigate this essay i began joting down my goals of writing this essay and what I wanted to apply into my essay.

  • I wanted my essay to be descriptive
  • I wanted my essay to truly express how I felt through my transfer and how it impacted me so much
  • I wanted my essay to be fun to read and not too boring
  • Lastly I wanted my essay to be proper MLA formatting
